Jazz & Soul in Charm City

Baltimore, MD

Artscape 2011 proved to bring a diverse pallet of music this year. Artscape, takes place in downtown Baltimore, MD and is the largest FREE outdoor music and arts festival in the USA. Tents of local artists and corporate promotional material line long stretches of avenues surrounding the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Outside on Saturday the 16th, Hardbop was able to catch two soulful songstresses and one progressive-free jazz group.  Here are some photos from Carolyn Malachi and Nikka Costa‘s sets at the Wells Fargo stage:

Turn Around Norman

The end of the day, at the Urbanite stage, Turn Around Norman played at 6pm slot. Their music is twisting at times with its awkward time signatures and weaving melodic lines. They’ve been playing together since 2005 so the group has learned how to freely improvise around their own music. At one moment, bassist Adam Hopkins held a pedal point at moment allowing the harmony to shift underneath while JJ Wright (keyboards) responds the tempo changes and poly-rhythmic complexities of Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums. Look out for this group on the NYC scene. Here is a video on the group including footage from  their Artscape 2011 performance:
